Georgina Bell is working locum with Medic Oncall.

What attracted you to locum with Medic Oncall?

Medic Oncall has been very supportive in providing a role that recognises my need for flexible working arrangements – not only am I working full time, but I am also a mum to a toddler!

Think back to when you first registered with Medic Oncall, how was the overall process from registering to getting your first locum shift?

The staff at Medic Oncall (Danielle and others), provided me with very clear and straight forward guidance regarding the application process and registration requirements.

What have you learned about yourself through the locum work that you do?

Through my locum work I have learned that my clinical skills have a broader application (beyond direct intervention). I have also developed knowledge regarding a new organisational framework, as well as the capacity to work within a consultant capacity.

What are the three main benefits of working as a locum?

  1. Flexibility
  2. Skill development
  3. Well remunerated for work

How has locum work affected your personal life and work-life balance?

Working locum can be a difficult juggle at times, but the flexibility of locum work has proven invaluable during times of illness (myself or family) or when I need to take leave.

What should medical professionals be looking out for when searching for a locum work provider?

  1. Flexibility
  2. Clear points of contact to familiarise with policies and procedures of a workplace
  3. Equal and fair treatment of staff irrespective of employment arrangement (locum/ casual vs permanent)

Has there been a location that you have enjoyed working at, and has been memorable?

I have only worked as a locum for the one employer. I am currently working from home – that in itself has been memorable. It is great to still have the ability to connect with the team, even if it is via “teams”.

What advice do you have for medical professionals considering working locum?

When starting work, I was initially afraid to ask too many questions. I have come to realise the importance of well informed opinions and clear communication. This is essential to the provision of excellent care. So the advice is don’t be afraid to ask questions!
