What is a locum?
A locum is a medical practitioner who has obtained General Registration in the State or Territory where the locum work is undertaken and works for a period less than a full time contract, for casual or locum rates. This can mean anything from a single shift to a few months of full time or part time work.

When can I start working as a Locum?
You must have completed your Internship, and be eligible to hold General Registration with an Australian or New Zealand Medical Registration Board and be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or be a permanent resident with unrestricted work rights.

How do I find suitable locum positions?
You register your interest with Medic Oncall. This involves providing us with your details including an up to date curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of 3 Consultant level referees. Registration with Medic Oncall's service is FREE!

The Medic Oncall registration team will obtain confidential professional referee assessments on you and verify your credentials. Once your registration is completed with Medic Oncall our customer service team will personally contact you to discuss your availability and needs.

Where can I work as a Locum?
Once you have General Registration in one State or Territory of Australia you can work anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, as you are entitled to mutual recognition of your General Registration in the other States.

I have conditions on my registration. Can I work as a locum?
As a Medic Oncall medical practitioner you have an obligation to notify us of any conditions on your registration. Medic Oncall has a non-discrimination policy and will endeavor to source suitable positions for you within the scope of your conditions.

How much will I be paid?
Medic Oncall does not set the rate of pay. Hospitals will notify Medic Oncall of the rate of pay for a designated shift. However to protect you Medic Oncall has set a minimum rate of pay that is in line with industry standards. Nothing prevents health services from offering a higher rate of pay in order to obtain the best possible medical staff.

How will I be paid?
The majority of our health service clients will pay you through their payroll system. Others, such as most private health service providers will pay you on presentation of an invoice. Our customer service team will discuss these options with you for each position.

What about travel and accommodation?
Areas outside of the metropolitan areas usually provide you with accommodation during your position. Some health services will also provide you with flights, train or petrol reimbursement depending on the length and location of the position.
